Excerpt from The Locomotive, Vol. 19: January, 1898

It takes a surprisingly large amount of heat to raise the temperature of half a ton of water through 80 or 90 degrees. We have seen that we should have to use 77 pounds of steam every minute, in order to raise the temperature of 8,980pounds of water from 82°: up to 170°: in minutes. This is at the rate of 77 X 60: pounds of steam per hour: and allowing 30 pounds per hour as the equivalent of a horse-power, we see that, in order to do the heating at this rate, we should have to have a boiler capacity of at least horse-power.
